Beyond the Board
Beyond the Board was a two-part project aimed at learning more about the Syracuse skateboarding community and sharing their story. We collaborated with SyracuseSkate to create a video that was high-energy, fun, and true to the spirit of the local skate scene.
After exploring the community’s history and meeting the people behind it, we set out to design a skate park for the town of Ortigia, a place that did not yet have one. Focused on the needs and values of the community, we built a modular skate park using only reused materials. Both the video and the modular structures serve as a love letter to this vibrant community in Sicily.

PLANNING
We began the planning process by researching skateparks, focusing on each object's modularity and the specific needs of local skaters.
Scaled models were created to accurately plan the layout, considering space and potential skating routes.
CREATING
Once the ideation and research were done, it was time to get our hands dirty. Since sustainability and the “DIY” mindset were a huge part of the skateboarding mentality, we only used repurposed materials for our builds.
During the building process, we worked with engineers and professional skateboarders who could give us feedback on our objects and whether they were durable and usable.
FINAL PRODUCT
At the launch event, each group got to present their object and give a behind-the-scenes look at their design process.
SyracuseSkate showed up to skate, and the space was open to the whole community. We premiered the video and gifted the skateable objects to the Syracuse skate scene, which didn’t have a park of its own until now.
